Intervention to Address Healthcare Worker Based Stigma in Hospitals

The science to medicine transition for substance use disorder treatment has been stymied by stigma. This workshop will guide participants through a hospital intervention that includes a perspective-taking exercise, a neurobiology of addiction component, and an educational session on medications for addiction treatment. A toolkit will be shared to assist others in the development of their own stigma training. Workshop participants will work in small groups to develop their own plan to address stigma in their respective setting.

Learning Objectives:

Learners will be able to:
  • Identify healthcare worker stigma against people who drugs as a significant barrier to the provision of high quality, evidence-based treatment in hospitals and Emergency departments.
  • Discuss the impact of stigma through the lens of a person with lived history of substance use disorder.
  • Develop an action plan to address stigma, facilitated with the assistance of a tool and through a short example of an intervention that has been successfully completed in hospital, clinic, and community settings.
