There has been increased interest in the use of ketamine, ibogaine, MDMA, psilocybin, and dimethyltryptamine and harmaline alkaloids for the treatment of psychiatric and substance use disorders. The availability of various forms of these substances both illicitly and in medically directed settings lends importance to understanding the pharmacology, toxicology, and potential for downstream health and societal consequences. This session will summarize the evolving landscape of therapeutic psychoactive agents and highlight rising trends in adverse effects after overdose or therapeutic use.

Learners will be able to:

Review the pharmacology of therapeutic psychoactive agents: ketamine, ibogaine, MDMA (phenethylamines), psilocybin, and dimethyltryptamine and harmaline alkaloids
Develop a better understanding of the potential beneficial clinical effects, adverse effects and management strategies for patients experiencing toxicity or adverse effects of therapeutic psychoactive agents.
Address societal implications of using therapeutic psychoactive agents.
