Complications from benzodiazepine use and benzodiazepine-involved fatal overdoses are rising nationally over the last decade. This necessitates that clinicians are able to screen, diagnose, reduce harms, and manage the spectrum benzodiazepine missuse and benzodiazepine use disorder. This session will be a case-based didactic reviewing the clinical evaluation and management of benzodiazepine withdrawal and benzodiazepine use disorder. We will critically review the evidence for the current standards of practice, while highlighting emerging evidence and areas for further investigation.
Learning Objectives:
Learners will be able to:
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify the signs and symptoms specific to benzodiazepine withdrawal.
Upon completion, participants will be able to summarize the current evidence base for treatment of benzodiazepine withdrawal.
Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss harm reduction principles and management of benzodiazepine use disorder.
