Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is a burgeoning field within medicine and has many useful applications that improve patient care, provider experience, patient satisfaction, and reduce cost. Addiction medicine clinicians see patients every day with clinical scenarios that would benefit from the use of bedside ultrasound. We will help you become more comfortable utilizing POCUS through the use of three addiction medicine cases commonly seen in practice.

Appraise POCUS as an important modality in addiction medicine practice by reviewing POCUS’ benefits, fundamentals/definitions, and data supporting its use.
Propose 3 clinical scenarios where POCUS can aid the clinician in diagnosis and medical decision making in the ambulatory setting focusing on common issues when caring for individuals with substance use disorders.
Identify best practices for establishing a POCUS curriculum in a training program and discuss future steps for POCUS education at ASAM educational events utilizing participant feedback.
